Many small contributions can make a big difference: like when the Saginaw Optimist Club set up the Saginaw Community Foundation’s first scholarship fund. The “Officer Ed” Scholarship
honors Ed Nowaczyk, longtime Saginaw police officer and Optimist. When Ed passed away, his family suggested memorials to the club.

“People remembered Officer Ed’s efforts behind the Safety Patrol and school safety programs in the 1940s through the ’60s. We received many donations,” says James Kelly, the club’s immediate past-president. “ At that time, the foundation was just forming. We created this scholarship for students planning a law enforcement career. It’s been our legacy to keep this scholarship going.”
