The University of Michigan has the largest organization collegiate alumni body in the United States with over 324,000 graduates and 195 alumni clubs. The William and Cordula Freese Scholarship was created in 1982 to assist students with visual or physical handicaps. William Freese, who was visually handicapped, and his wife Cordula, created a living trust to assist handicapped students obtain a college education.

The Saginaw High School Alumni Memorial Scholarship was established in 1945 to memorialize the 60 alumni who were killed in World War II. Through donations from alumni and local business and industrial firms, $50,000 was raised the scholarship was endowed. The first $1,000 award was presented in 1946 to George Leo.
