David and Connie Smith were married for more than 30 years and had resided in Bridgeport, Mich. since the late 1980s. Together they had eight children (six boys and two girls). David, who loved to sing and read, served his country in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. David worked at Delphi Automotive in Saginaw, Mich. for over 25 years. Connie, who loved sports and music, was a chef, mother, best friend, and homemaker. They both enjoyed reading about and watching Bridgeport High School Sports even after their own children, who were student athletes at Bridgeport High School, had graduated. They believed in a good education, family, faith, discipline, giving your best, love, and helping others.
This scholarship was established to help graduating student athletes of Bridgeport High School who enroll and attend a college or university by the fall semester upon graduating from Bridgeport High School. As students prepare for their future, the first year of college is the beginning of a new journey. With this scholarship, David and Connie give their love and support to the graduating student athletes of Bridgeport High School as they pursue their goals, dreams, and attainment of a college degree.

- Graduating high school senior from Bridgeport High School
- Boys or girls varsity football or varsity basketball student athlete
- Full-time enrollment
- Pursuing undergraduate degree
