Bob and Betty Grills Scholarship

This scholarship was created to honor the memory of Robert “Bob” Grills and Elizabeth “Betty” Grills.

 

Bob was a graduate of Flint Central High School where he was Michigan State Debate Champion his senior year. Robert received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan, School of Business. He married Elizabeth Ann Emery Spence, October 27, 1978. He began his career with sixteen years of service to General Motors. In 1967 he joined Merrill-Lynch, retiring as a Vice President and a Certified Financial Planner, in 1993 with twenty-six years of service. Robert served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War, was of the Presbyterian faith, and a member the Genesee Lodge #175, F. & A.M and the Bay City Consistory. He was active with and had served as President of Pit and Balcony.

 

Betty was a graduate of Kent Place School, Class of 1951 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1955 from Smith College. She married Robert J. Grills, the love of her life, on October 27, 1978. He predeceased her on July 20, 2011. Elizabeth was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and retired from Yeo and Yeo after 22 years of service. She displayed her love of volunteering at Cartwright Care Center and was a member of many organizations including, the Visiting Nurses Association, where she was president for three years, the Covenant Healthcare Foundation, Saginaw General Foundation, Saginaw Symphony Orchestra, Voluntary Action and the Junior League of Saginaw. She enjoyed reading, gardening, trips to the casino, and most of all spending time with her loving family. 

 

Qualifications

● Resident of Michigan with preference given to residents of the Great Lakes Bay Region
● Attending Central Michigan University College of Medicine
● Pursuing a degree as medical doctor, physician’s assistant, or psychiatry
● Full-time enrollment

Resident of the Great Lakes Bay Region (50); letters of recommendation (25); essay on career goals (15); awards and honors (10)
