Carrie B. HinesCarrie B. Hines was born March 2, 1937 in Selma, Ala. She is the mother of Booker, Virginia, Herman and Sonny Hines. Carrie was married to Henry Hines for 48 years. She was an entrepreneur who spent many years selling Watkins Products. Carrie was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church of Saginaw where she sang in the choir, served on the Mother’s Board and taught youth and adult classes.

 

Carrie served as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saginaw County for 27 years. While a volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saginaw County, Carrie was a big sister to six sisters who went on to become mothers, employees and leaders in Saginaw County.

 

Carrie dedicated her life to emulating Christ in thought, word and deed. Her love of family, children and the elderly was evidenced by her willingness to assist and support those in need. Carrie passed away March 30, 2014. She is loved and missed by family and friends.

 

To honor Carrie’s memory and her dedication to Christ, Family and Saginaw County, the Carrie B. Hines Endowment Scholarship was established by her daughter, Virginia A. Hines, PhD./Carrie B. Inc. to encourage participants of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saginaw County to volunteer to assist those in need and pursue higher education at Ferris State University. The award is funded through the sale of a gospel CD entitled “In Memory of a Virtuous Woman: Carrie B. Hines.”

 

Qualifications

● Minimum 2.0 GPA
● Minority student 
● Minimum two (2) years participation with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saginaw County prior to high school graduation
● Minimum of 20 volunteer hours at a Veterans Health Administration Hospital or Clinic to be completed during the last two years of high school


If the student does not meet all of the above requirements, then they must meet the following criteria in order to qualify:

 

● Graduating high school senior from Arthur Hill High School, Bridgeport High School, Carrollton High School, Heritage High School, or Saginaw High School
● Minimum 2.5 GPA

● Minority student
● Pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree at any Michigan college/university or the University of Maryland at Baltimore campus
● Applicant must submit a 375-word essay (typed and double-spaced) along with their application. The essay should address the value of education and the role of education in aiding the student to reach their aspirations in life. The applicant is encouraged to highlight their volunteer experience, core values, and best practices gleaned from the volunteer experience
● Minimum of 40 volunteer hours at a Veterans Health Administration Hospital or Clinic to be completed during the last two years of high school
