Gerald A. Meyer’s passion in life was education. He dedicated his life to teaching. For over three decades, he made a dead language come alive for students in Saginaw Township Schools. As the district’s Latin teacher, Gerry donned a toga for special events and went by the formal title of “Magister” inside his classroom, taking his students back to Roman times. Along with teaching, Gerry shared his love of education and travel, taking hundreds of area students to see first-hand the places he taught about.

Gerry graduated with an B.A. in Latin from the University of Michigan in 1969. He continued his education at Saginaw Valley State University with a M.A.T. in teaching. Besides teaching at Heritage High School, he was also an Adjunct Professor of Latin at Saginaw Valley State University. Gerry received Saginaw Township’s Teacher of the Year award in 1983. He was active in various capacities in the promotion of foreign language serving as the president of the Michigan Foreign Language Association in 1979, 1989 and 1999. Gerry was also involved with the Junior Classical League of Michigan.
